Everything about the world's longest driverless metro and the brand new Dubai Tram


The metro was launched in Dubai on 9th Sep 2009 (09-09-09). It is the backbone of the public transport network in Dubai and is widely used by the tourists and residents to get around in Dubai.

The Dubai metro stations are conveniently located near the tourist points of interest and the metro is also connected to Dubai Tram. The total length of Dubai metro is 75kms and currently has 2 lines - Red line and Green line.
  • Runs from Al Rashidiya to Jebel Ali spanning a distance of 52kms.
  • End to end trip duration is about 70mins.
  • Attractions on the Red Line : Burj Khalifa, Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Batuta mall, Deira City center, World Trade centre, Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Marina.
  • Red line also passes through Dubai Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
  • Runs from Etisalat station to Creek station spanning a distance of 22kms.
  • End to end trip duration is about 50mins.
  • The green line runs parallel to the Dubai Creek and can be used to visit the Dubai Museum, Bastakiya heritage village, Wafi City, Creek Park, Dubai Dolphinarium, Gold Souq, Spice Souq, etc.
  • The Red and Green lines are connected by 2 transfer stations - the Union Square station and the Burjuman (previously called Khalid bin Waleed) station.
  • The Red line also connects to the Dubai Tram at Jumeirah Lake Towers and Dubai Marina Metro station.
  • Sat to Wed - 5:50am to 00:00am
  • Thursday - 5:50am to 01:00am
  • Friday - 1:00pm to 01:00am
  • Note that the Dubai Metro opens at 1pm on Fridays

  • Metro announcements, directions and signages are in Arabic and English.
  • Every train has 2 special cabins - one for ladies and one for Gold Class. The special Gold Class cabin offers wide leather seats and panoramic views.
  • Dubai Metro also has wifi access which can be purchased by connecting to DU Wifi network inside the metro. Cost is AED 10 per hour.
  • You can carry upto 2 suitcases in the Dubai Metro, specially useful when you are going to/from the airport.
  • Eating, Drinking, Smoking is strictly prohibited in the public transport in Dubai.
  • Misuse of emergency buttons could lead to a fine of AED 2000.

    Dubai Tram was officially opened on 11-11-2014. The Tram has 1 Gold class compartment, 2 compartments for Women and Children and 4 General Silver class compartments. The first phase of the Dubai Tram covers 10.6 kms and it takes around 40 minutes to travel the entire distance.

    Future network expansion will increase the distance to 14kms and serve 19 stations.

  • The tram runs in the Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai Marina and Al Sufouh areas.
  • It stops at 11 stations - JBR 1, JBR 2, JLT, Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai Marina, Marina Towers, Mina Siyahi, Dubai Media City, the Palm Jumeirah, Knowledge Village, and Safouh.
  • The Dubai Tram connects to Dubai Metro Red Line at Jumeirah Lake Towers and Dubai Marina Metro station.
  • The Tram also connects with the Palm Jumeirah Monorail.
  • Tram ride costs AED 4 with NOL Red Card, AED 3 with NOL Silver Card and AED 6 with NOL Gold card, irrespective of the distance travelled.
  • Operation hours : 6.30am to 1.30am from Sat to Thu and 9am to 1.30 am on Fridays.
  • You will be fined AED 1000 for crossing the Dubai Tram track anywhere other than the designated areas.
  • Fines for obstructing the tram movement or jumping the Red lights and causing accidents are much steeper and can go upto AED 30000.
